In the “All about electric” post, I detailed how I initially installed a 30A shore power inlet at the rear driver’s corner D-pillar of the van, underneath the van. I originally chose this location for stealth purposes and also because I did NOT want to put another huge hole in the van where there are already large holes in this area.
Well after 2 years and occasional usage, I noticed that almost every time I flipped open the cover to the inlet, a fair amount of water dripped out onto the ground. The actual metal contacts weren’t wet but I couldn’t tell where the water was entering. At first I thought it was just spray-mist from the rear dual tires however I began to notice when the last rainfall was and driving patterns and even after a few days, water would spill out. This is obviously a HUGE shock hazard if water were to short out the 30A contacts!!! Something that cannot be left to chance. So I decided to replace the inlet and move it to a location that would minimize water intrusion. I didn’t want to put it on the side of the van so I chose the plastic bumper, rear corner.

Luckily, I had a lot of slack in the 10/3 Marine wire so all that was needed was to re-route the wiring to the new location and mount the inlet. The only thing to do was to make sure the door was still able to fully swing 270 degrees open when the connection was made. Here is the result:
