Floor, Ceiling & More…

Just like insulation, there are a few ways to go about finishing your van floor. The most common is probably by using some sort of vinyl flooring product. To recap, we re-used the Ford passenger van flooring which fit nicely into the metal van floor ribs. Then we added 0.5″ XPS insulation glue thereto. On top of the insulation we glued down 0.5″ plywood over which we placed our vinyl flooring planks. We opted for simple vinyl floor planking which were easy to install using the peel n stick version:

In addition to the adhesive on the backside of the tiles themselves, we also used some vinyl floor adhesive. So far they are holding up just OK as I’ve had to re-glue a couple of them. If I had to do it over again, I would have probably used a vinyl sheet of flooring or even vinyl click planks just for a more robust flooring surface. The one bonus I see with these planks are their ease of replacement if something were to damage them.

For the walls of the van, we used some decorative wall panels. They are pretty thin and come with adhesive foam tape however in addition to the foam tape, we also used an adhesive such as Liquid Nails Fuze-It. This was applied over either 0.25″ birch plywood or in some areas of the van 0.5″ birch plywood depending upon if more structure was required.

For our van ceiling, we used 3/8″ tongue/groove MDF shiplap from the big box store as we wanted a more homey-finished look. In order to install these onto the van ceiling metal skeleton, we made some “furring strips” of sorts which were bolted into the ceiling cross supports. For these we used 0.75″ plywood cut into 3″ strips of various lengths to fit the contour of the ceiling. The shiplap was then screwed into these furring strips.

We needed a countertop for our kitchen galley and since we wanted it to be of narrow depth, we decided to buy a Karlby IKEA wood veneer countertop and cut it to size. If you are looking at one for your own build just a heads-up it is HEAVY. Probably a bit of overkill but it definitely does the job.
